The most famous landmark of Hawaii is located on the island of Oahu and is known to the Hawaiians as Leahi, or the "forehead of ahi tuna". Pearl Harbor, the largest natural harbor of Hawaii, was named this way for the pearl oysters once picked from here. However, it is not known for its natural riches but for the tragic history made on this exact spot. Thousands died on December 7th, 1941 when Japan attacked the US Naval Base and inevitably involved USA in World War II. Pearl Harbor now honors this event and the brave soldiers of that day through a chain of historic memorial sites: USS Arizona, Battleship Missouri, USS Oklahoma, USS Bowfin Submarine and the Pacific Aviation Museum.

Gorgeous Iolani Palace was the official residence of Hawaii's last two monarchs, King Kalakaua and his sister and successor, Queen Liliuokalani.
