Due to its strategic location, the Yanmenguan Pass of the Great Wall is considered to be one of the most important gates. It was initially built during the Warrior States period and continuously reconstructed since. The name means "wild goose" as there are many geese to be seen in the area.
The temple was originally built during the Tang Dynasty (618-907). However it was destroyed and rebuilt multiple times since then due to warfare and change in dynasties. It features a beautiful Five Dragon Screen, considered one of the Dragon treasures of Datong.
